![]() ![]() This can get tricky, especially if you move it from device to device, because of Bluetooth idiosyncrasies. The best new movies to watch at home this weekend, including A Man Named Otto, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, The Pope’s Exorcist, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, and more on streaming. As noted earlier this week, Steam quietly enabled Bluetooth support in the Steam Controller in preparation for this launch. Then you connect your Bluetooth controller to the device. It also means your streaming box or phone has to be attached to the same network and the bandwidth needs to be pretty constant. That's because it sends whatever's coming off the video card to the app. If you've never used Steam's streaming, you should note that it completely takes over your system, simultaneously displaying the streamed game. First, you enable and set up Steam's in-home streaming feature within the desktop Steam application on a host system attached to your network. ![]() There are three steps to setting up the system. In that sense, the clean, easy-to-use interface is a welcome surprise. So it's set the bar pretty low in what we expect from the company on mobile. However, if your Mac is on wifi too, I could see that there could be some problems, but a "n" (or "ac") grade wifi should be able to handle it.Valve's been lagging in its app development if you judge by its current Steam mobile app (on both Android and iOS), which is clunky, ugly and missing some capabilities. I'm always surprised by how little bandwidth it uses. In fact, with the Mac on Ethernet, it can download new videos from the iTunes Store while serving up content from the NAS to the ATV. I'm on 802.11n now, and it's handling 1080p streams no problem (don't remember if I tried that on the "g" wifi). Even with my older 802.11g network, my Mac mini (hooked up to Ethernet and thus hooked up "closely" to the NAS) could pull the files off the NAS and stream them (over wifi) to the ATV. Let me thrown my $0.02 in by saying that unless you're running your iMac over wi-fi, this will work fine. ![]() Others have pointed out some options, like using ATV2+Plex, or PlexConnect (which is VERY difficult to setup). ![]() Download the Steam Link app on your iPhone and open it. Turn on your Mac or PC and open Steam, and make sure both the iOS device (or Apple TV) and the host computer are on the same network. To answer the op's exact question, "No, ATV is not intelligent enough to stream directly from a NAS". You just have to search for the Steam Link app on the tvOS app store yourself. ![]()
